Boom Karuna Project

A charity project that supports positive social action around the world

Named after the Sanskrit word for compassion, the Boom Karuna Project was conceived in 2014 with the intention of sharing a part of Boom’s revenues with the local Idanha-a-Nova community. 

During the 2018 edition of the festival, we were able to go beyond the local area, distributing €40,000 to several different projects including an international home-schooling campus in Idanha-a-Nova, the Kosmicare Association and Castelo Branco wildlife recovery centre CERAS.

Funds have also been distributed to projects Fundação Álvaro Carvalho, AERID (a centre for children with physical disabilities), and to the NGO Missão Dimix, which promotes education through art for children and teenagers living in the African island of São Tomé & Príncipe.

Supporting Missão Dimix

Young children were introduced to the concept of recycling waste that is washed up onto the shores of the African island of São Tomé & Príncipe. 

Once collected, recycled plastic was transformed into bricks to be used in construction after they were processed by a plastic recycling machine. 

A total of five days were spent working with children, teaching art through recycling and learning how waste can be used as a resource. From making baskets to growing vertical gardens from old plastic water bottles in which seeds were planted for aromatic plants - local children and adults learned new ways of using waste as a resource.
