TRANSCENDING IDENTITIES: LIGHTS AND SHADOWS OF IDENTITY POLITICS IN THE CLUB AND FESTIVAL SCENES

What is the value of diversity? Should we debate identity over talent? What is talent? What are the tensions between gatekeeping and accessibility? 

Over the past years, the critique of exclusion and monoculture have reshaped how we understand power and access in electronic music spaces, like clubs and festivals. Within artist line ups, team composition, vibe curation, door selection, anti-discrimination and safer spaces policies, there is an increased awareness of the importance of including marginalised or underrepresented people.

At the same time, the co-optation of identity politics by powerful players (festivals, clubs…) can be dishonest and self-serving, by giving the i mpression to be inclusive on the surface, while actually perpetuating exploitation in many hidden ways.
